Youth not infrequently are marked by hunger, homelessness, violence, even homicide. Some struggle with school attendance and achievement. MIKE Program offers intensive training and supports volunteers to become effective mentors in youth groups. MIKE Program mentors equip young people to lead healthy productive lives when the health consequences of their actions are still to come. MIKE Program equips youth to make better choices; eat nutritious food, drink water instead of soda, exercise, avoid tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs, and to speak up for themselves and others when media, policy, and other factors contribute to disease. The youth then train their peers, family, and communities to do the same. |
Volunteer mentors work with teachers or case managers and their youth groups. Mentors guide the youth to become self-sustaining citizens; health conscious, knowledgeable about how to access health care, and, themselves more likely to become role models and health care providers. MIKE Program, an example of group mentoring, is a powerful, cost-effective intervention to bring those at greatest risk of future kidney disease; diverse, socio-economically disadvantaged youth, into a supportive environment of inquiry and action to make changes for better health outcomes. Multicultural Integrated Kidney Education Program is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Tax ID # 45-0520604. Donations to the MIKE Program are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. |
